In the context of its activity in the use of the most advanced technological tools and artificial intelligence in competition law enforcement, as well as in promoting the use of these tools by national Competition Authorities of other countries, the Hellenic Competition Commission (HCC) organized a workshop on "Digital investigative tools and AI in competition law enforcement", on 03 and 04 October 2023.
The workshop was hybrid (virtual, through teleconferencing, and in-person attendance at the HCC’s premises), with the participation of forensic experts and IT and data science specialists from the European Commission as well as from competition authorities of other EU member states and third countries, in particular, experts from the Arab League countries and the African Competition Forum, as well as officials from the HCC’s Information Technology Systems and Forensics Directorate and the team of the HCC’s Chief Technology Officer.
The workshop was organized in continuation of the trilateral cooperation between the Competition Authorities of Egypt, Cyprus and Greece and was aimed at disseminating the considerable know-how in the use of technologies and data science in competition law enforcement developed by the Hellenic Competition Commission over the last three years and the development of a wider cooperation network (also including non-EU countries).
During the workshop, which consisted of two sessions, namely Session I: "Digital Investigative tool: a tour of the horizon" and Session II: "The use of AI and RegTech in competition law enforcement: a progress report", an open discussion was held on the challenges involved in the integration of artificial intelligence and computational methods in the work of Competition Authorities, and presentations were made on the use of forensics tools and artificial intelligence as well as on the possibilities provided by these technologies.
