Under the present circumstances in which the country is being afflicted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Hellenic Competition Commission (HCC) is monitoring developments in order to intervene, where necessary, in its capacity to find any breaches of competition law with a view to safeguarding a sound competitive market structure, protecting consumer interests and economic growth.
In this context, the HCC, by decision of its President, adopted on 20 March 2020, set up a Covid-19_Competition Task Force. Its task is to provide businesses and citizens with information about the application of competition rules in the form of announcements and Questions & Answers, inform the public about the investigations carried out by the HCC in currently crucial business sectors, inform the public about the Authority’s procedural matters in the present context and post the actions of other national competition authorities and the European Commission on its website. Among the primary objectives of this Task Force is also to create a hub collecting questions raised by different institutions and businesses, concerning the initiatives they intend to take and their compatibility with competition law, as well as to ensure immediate response thereto.
The HCC fully understands that businesses need to adjust their operation and organization in order to respond to the significant changes in supply and demand market conditions, in order to ensure their financial viability in the particularly critical coming period, which we all hope to be short.
The challenges faced by the business world and the prevailing general uncertainty must not, however, lead to unlawful conduct such as excessive pricing or prohibited agreements between undertakings likely to undermine consumer and public interest.
