The Hellenic Competition Commission (HCC) decided to launch a mapping study to thoroughly assess the conditions of competition in the animal feed sector.
This mapping study is complementary to the mapping of the veterinary medicinal products (VMPs) market initiated by the relevant HCC Decision in May 2024. (see press release[1]).
Both mapping studies are part of the Authority's strategic goal to assess the conditions of competition in the agri-food sector in Greece and, in particular, in the supply chain of basic food products. The implementation of this strategy started in 2023 with the Authority's sector inquiry into six basic consumer goods at the retail level, including fresh milk. (see Sector Inquiry findings, HCC’s Newsletter-Issue 8, December 2023).
The market mappings launched in 2024 focus on the upstream stages of the supply chain, notably on combined inputs representing a high share of production costs. In particular, animal feed represent 75% of livestock farming costs (incl. VMPs costs), while the compound feedstuffs price index increased by 33% from 2020 to the third quarter of 2023.
About Market Mapping
Market Mapping is a useful tool assisting the HCC in assessing the competitive conditions in any market or sector of the economy when this is required for the effective exercise of its powers.
A Market Mapping is immediately initiated upon decision of the HCC and carried out by the Directorate-General for Competition.
